What will the buildings look like?

I think when people hear the words "modular building", they automatically think of the double-wide trailers that sit outside of most public schools these days. Veteran Trinity parents may remember the row of trailers we had at Calvary Presbyterian with an outdoor deck connecting classrooms to a bathroom unit. The buildings going up on our new campus are very different from these images. They all have interior hallways and bathrooms; quiet efficient air-conditioners; and large classrooms.

Before the construction went into high gear at Millbrook, their principle, Dana King (who is a great leader and a fine Christian), allowed me to make several visits to their modular buildings, which are almost exactly the same as what we are having built. We made our hallways a little wider to better accommodate lockers.

Although our class sizes are much smaller than Wake County's, we used their standard classroom size for our rooms. This will make the buildings easier to re-sell when we've completed our construction and should give our teachers some room to spread out with their students.

Dana shared with me that after they moved nearly half their classes into the modularize over Christmas break last year, that the teachers who moved into the modularize were very happy, and she had to console the ones who had to continue in Millbrook's original building.

Our campus will have four of these large (110x70) buildings. There will be one building each for lower, middle, and high school that will pretty closely match the floor plan to the left. The last building will be a little different. Half of this building will be one large room for assemblies and lunch. The other half will be the administrative offices. This last building will also have 9 foot ceilings (the others are 8 foot) to accommodate risers and a stage at assemblies.

When I tell people how excited the kids and I are about our new campus, they are a tad bit confused when they realize we will be in "trailers" and equally as confused as Will, Emily and I are so excited to be in "trailers". These massive "temporary buildings" are awesome - and resellable? How cool!
